Garage door. What to buy?
« on: May 13, 2004, 10:36:34 PM »
Building a garage/shop.  I am shoping for a door 18'x8'.  That will give the best noise attenuation.  I am only interested in reducing wood and metal cutting noises.  Not the low frequecy stuff.  Manufacturers only spec heat transmission not sound.

Tom,

That is generally the rule with garage door manufacturers. They have not yet gotten on the soundproofing bandwagon. I would get a well insulated one piece as opposed to the segmented door, (too many gaps and bends in segmented doors) then soundproof the new door with a closed cell foam mat or better yet a combination of closed cell foam mat atop a layer of mass loaded vinyl, (MLV). You will also need to be certain that there are no gaps or air leaks around the new door. See if you can find a door with an STC rating of at least 30 STC's. They should be out there. Thanks for the post.

Sincerely,
