furnace room

I have a family room with a common wall to the furnace room How can I preveent transmission of sound through that wall?

Lee,

 It would be pretty easy to simply line the walls with the Mass Loaded vinyl (MLV), caulk the seams and around the perimeter,  then perhaps drywall over it with a layer of 5/8" fire code drywall. That should do the trick.
Now something else you need to consider is door to the furnace area. It needs to be a solid core door if you want if you want it to be any kind of a soundproofer. Hollow core doors are not good at all for soundproofing due to the materials they are made of as well as their paper thinness.
