Removing textured ceiling
« on: January 07, 2005, 10:50:26 PM »
My 15 yr old townhouse has sprayed on textured ceilings over drywall. This type of ceiling is so hard to keep clean. I will have to repair some of the ceilings as there is water damage in areas. So I am considering removing the texture, and painting off white to match the walls. Does the texture absorb a lot of sound and will the room be noisy with the texture removed? What is the noise reduction coefficient of textured ceiling vs painted drywall? I have also removed the carpet and am installing laminate flooring as I'm alergic to the things in carpet.

Hello Ben,
Sounds like a messy job. Textuerd ceilings offer little if any benefit. Choose soft funiture and draperies to help absorb the sound. Also, Hang sizeable pictures or cloth wall hangings to help prevent  echo. You need what are considered sound absorbing  furnishings.
With all your hard surface, you will want to add some of these soundproofing suggestions.

Good Luck
