echo reverberation

We have a new open concept home with hardwood floors (allergies limit rugs) and 10 foot ceilings. In the middle of the home there is an open staircase with a 25 foot ceiling. The echo and reverberation is terrible. I can hear my husband speaking in a normal voice downstairs when I am upstairs in a bedroom.  I believe the worst problem in the reverb coming off the walls and the ceiling in the staircase. Are there panels that I could hang on the outside of the walls to absorb the noise? What would you do?
