sounproofing hall/cafeteria

I'm looking for info on how to minimize the cacophony in the lunchroom of our school.  The walls are made of cinderblock (3 walls) one wall has a stage with curtains.  The ceiling is a cathedral ceiling made of wood.  The powers that be don't want to change the ceiling.  I would like to put panels up to absorb as much sound as possible.  (300 hundred children eat their lunch in this room)  Does anyone have any suggestions?
