Space out acoustic panels, or consolidate?
« on: August 04, 2004, 07:00:17 PM »
I recently inherited 60 sq feet of acoustic panels. They 15" x 15" and about 3 inches thick and look sort of like square brillo pads. I would like to use them to deaden the sound in my basement (used as music room). Would it make more sense to cover everyinch of one wall with them or space them out to have some on each wall?
I also am thinking of haning a vinyl curtain in the middle of the room to shrink the room and keep the sound on one side, sound like a bad idea?

Thanks so much for your help.

You are in a good shape here with your music room and the acoustical panels. Now, you do realize that these panels are for sound conditioning and not for soundproofing, big difference readers. I would space them out evenly and then move them around until I find the sweet spot (the spot where you get just the right reverb times for recording and practice.) By moving the panels about, you can make the room sound larger than it is or smaller (like a small coffee house etc.)
Mike, you're a lucky man. Thanks for the post.
