is foam a goer?
« on: August 23, 2004, 08:36:28 AM »
I have access to foam, the kind that is in lounge cusions, looks like sponge. I need to soundproof my shed coz my band is very louud. I'm thinking of cutting it to size and sticking it between the studs. and putting kitchen cupboard  board ontop of it. I have free access to these materials, Does any one know if it will be worth it?

No Adam, such open cell foam will not soundproof anything, just absorb sound and deaden it.  However a closed cell foam will.

A barrier such as MLV (Mass Loaded Vinyl) is the material of choice here, even though other materials such as concrete board work well, too.

Such foam also burns rapidly and with noxious fumes.
