I'm not too sure if my problem is similar to some below or not.  I live with a roommate in a two story townhouse.  The two bedrooms are on separate floors, but right on top of each other.  I have the downstairs room, and whenever my roommate walks on her floor (my ceiling) the noise is terrible.  There are creaks, "booms" from closet doors, and footsteps that seem way too loud.  Do I have any options to stop this noise?

How about switching rooms?  Maybe your roommate wouldn't mind the noise as much as you would.  Or you could work out a deal to switch every year or every six months. Sounds so basic, doesn't it?  The person on the first floor is always the one suffering.  You have a situation that can possibly be worked out with some compromise with your roommate.  Unfortunately, for those of us stuck on the first floor, there is no switching apartments or even getting neighbors to be considerate!!  Good luck.
