noise from car dashboard
« on: November 12, 2004, 09:12:32 AM »
I have a new car that is nice and quiet. Problem is that the windscreen wipers make a clicking noise. Dealer says it is 'normal' and is due to the electrical relay. there is a fairly large space under the dash that I think could be filled with some sound absorbing substance - its where the cables and fuses are. Is there an easy to use material that I can put in that will absorb the sound, not go on fire (!) and that can be easily put in and taken out again when service needs to be done, fuses accessed, &c. Any suggestions gladly accepted as I'm new to this topic!

First I would determine the location of that electrical
relay by running the wipers. Next I would attempt to acoustically isolate the part, if possible by moving it (if necessary) so that
1) the sound is generates is contained, if possible, and 2) any metal to metal connection, (for example, its mounting bracket) is acoustically decoupled from the car body/chassis, etc. by using a fabricated rubber/vinyl washer.
