floor in rented house

I rent a two story house.  I work downstairs and I can hear my kids running around upstairs.  The upstairs is carpeted.  Since the house is rented and I only plan to stay here for another year or two, I can't tear up the carpet and put something underneath.  Is there something that I can simply lay over the carpet to block the thumping noise of people walking (or running) upstairs?  I don't care how it looks or how thick it is.
