C A/C Air Handler
« on: May 28, 2005, 12:06:39 AM »
We bought a new house in south Florida.  The air handler for the first floor is near the living room.  It is in a closet solely for that purpose.  There is a louvered door to permit incoming airflow.  The floor in this closet is tile, and the walls are drywall.

I would like to soundproof the interior of the closet, and maybe dull the woosh a bit.

Any recommendations?

Ypu'll have to do away with the door and find an alternative input for the air...

Did you get any replies to your question?  I have just bought a home and the three bedroom doors upstairs are louvered, probably to promote air flow throughout the warmer upstairs.  I was thinking I could put some kind of 1/8" material on both sides of the doors, then maybe paint it to look better.  I have kids, and I even thought I could paint their doors with the chalkboard paint so they can write on them.

Such a house probably has a central fan system which pulls air in and
through the house and exits it somewhere.  The louvered doors play a
role in the ventilation system and of course shouldn't be closed off.

So the best way to provide airflow is to make a cover for each door
louver out of metal that stands off the door  an inch or so, thus
blocking the direct path of sound, but still providing airflow.  A
sheetmetal shop can easily make these if provided with the
measurements- make the covers quite a bit wider (or taller) than the area just to cover the
louvers.

Lining the covers with our closed cell foam will add to the sound
reduction by dampening the sounds direct sound path.
