Neighbors Hot Tub noise
« on: October 16, 2004, 09:34:19 AM »
Our neighbors hot tub is next to our house, the noise from the hot tub travels throughout our house. The hot tub is on a wooden deck. The previous hot tub they had was not a problem.
Is there a way to sound insulate the hot tub pumps? Would placing a sound proofing mat under the hot tub help?
The neighbor says there is nothing that can be done.

Hot tub pump update!
You can control the noise  by using the source, path, receiver model.
First at the source, lift the pump of the slab. Underneath the pump,  Lay it on a vibration pad.
Next, address the path of the noise. Allowing breathing room, create a box enclosure without a lid. The heater or pump needs a vent. Make a moderate size vent.  Allow just enough air flow. Face the vent away from your home. Inside the enclosure use Mass Loaded Vinyl (MLV), absorbent mat and acoustical caulking. The open end of the enclosure will face the slab. Along the edges where the enclosure meets the slab, Glue strips of absorbent mat to prevent vibration.
Finally, Let us sound proof the receiver. If you do not have a wall, build one pronto. Preferably, make it as tall if not taller than your home. Begin to plant trees and shrubs to absorb the sound. If a particular room is loud, address sound proofing the room.
The suggestion we make are general and meant to be used by most "do it yourselfers."

Some work is best preformed by professionals such as brick and block work and raising the pump from the slab.

Hopefully, this will start the wheels turning.

We have exactly this problem.  It's 2AM and I am up and unable to sleep due to the vibration that comes through the wall from the lower deck where his hot tub is running.  HELP!!  We'll do whatever it takes to improve the situation because otherwise we have to sell our house and move.  Did you find any way to rectify the situation with the owner next door?  Our new owner (the other owner didn't use his hot tub or only infrequently which we managed to tolerate) is willing to do something but hasn't taken any action.

We'd really appreciate any suggestions......Thanks!
