TV noise from another room
« on: November 24, 2005, 12:22:34 AM »
I live in a house with a deaf husband who loves to watch TV every night.
How can I soundproof french doors between two rooms. With the doors closed I can still hear the TV.
Any suggestions ???

Hi Anna,

French doors are a real challenge because the sound goes through the single pane glass panels (or wood insets), around the sides, under the doors, and through the space in the middle.  You could get results be using closed cell foam self-adhesive back tape on the face of the door stops around the doors (sides and top) and of the one where one door closes against the other.  Add door sweeps (Transom Seal) at the bottom.  This will stop sound from flanking the doors.

For the face of the door there are barrier materials you can hang on the doors.  Some are clear vinyl and others are black.  Mass is what stops transmission (airborne) sound from going through.  Use 1/8" thick material.  Clear or black available with STC of 26 minimum.

Good Luck,
Joel
