Neighbors constant basketball playing
« on: April 11, 2006, 12:44:52 PM »
My neighbor's kids play basketball about 15 feet away from my living room wall.  The noise goes on for anywhere from 5 to 7 hours every evening.  I really don't know what I can do to keep the noise from entering my living room.  Is there anything I can do to an existing wall to keep this noise out?

Most of the noise is coming in through the windows.  A second set of windows will dampen the noise dramatically.

Expensive though.

Hi Ms Rusek,

If you only want to treat your existing walls to keep out the noise, then the most simple and effective thing to do is use Green Glue sandwiched between existing and a new layer of dry wall.  For info on Green Glue see

Another, more labor an material intesive, method is to cover the existing wall with two layers of MLV and a finish layer of drywall.  This will add 40 STC to existing walls, only take up 7/8", and more than triple the noise blocking capacity of the walls.
