Anyone compare Acrylic sheet to Soundproofwindow?
« on: September 22, 2006, 07:53:22 PM »

I have heavy road noise and large window opening (63"X70").
Thankfully I have brick exterior so hoping window is main source of noise.

Has anyone compared the acrylic sheet to soundproof windows?

I'm in Atlanta and I found a place that sells that size sheet .5 inch thick for $250. A lot cheaper than the quote I got from soundproofwindows.com

Thanks

Even though plastic is less dense than glass, 1/2" of plastic has an equal density (~ 3.0-3.1 lb/sq.ft.) of the 1/8" + 1/8" glass you'll find in a 'soundproof' window.  Just make sure you cut it well and have some good seals.  Maybe you'll want to make a new frame to screw or bolt the plexi to.

The downside is that it's not easily removable and will be quite heavy.  Not an issue if the window is non-operable.  Sounds like it might be.

Thanks for the reply.

I plan on applying white magnetic strips from local hardware store so panel will be easy to remove. I'll add a decorative edge to acrylic panel to enhance appearance. Only downside I see is the dead air space is 2 inches. Don't know if this is enough. If not I'll frame the window opening to increase dead air space but not sure about appearance.

Thanks again.

Hi michaell1999,

John B has great info for you on glass/acrylic comparison in his 9/23/06 reply.  Be sure to use acoustic caulk to seal around perimeter edge.  For a diagram of an on-sill installation with magnetic strips see http://soundproofing.org/sales/magnetseal_windows.htm

Hi Michaell1999

Can you please let me know the place you got the acrylic.
I leave in Suwanee, GA and looking to buy the acrylic for my windows.

Thank You

SRT5,

Give this company a call.
http://www.professionalplastics.com/contact

3/8" thick is ideal for traffic noise.
larger the air gap the better the reduction.

Mine is definitely a window regulator problem.  If it is from another make and someone can find the link, that would be great.

If I do have to buy new, does anyone know what else I may need to order with it, or will it come with everything it should??

Thanks
