Townhouse Banging from Neighbors
« on: April 17, 2001, 05:52:01 AM »
We bought a new townhouse in 99 and our neighbors home
is off set from ours putting their kitchen backed up to
our living room wall. Every time they shut their kitchen
cabinet it sounds like their in our house and it is very
disturbing. We contacted the builders and arranged to have
fiberglass blown into the neighbors side of the walls as
there is no insulation on their side. If anything it now
sounds worse. The builders wont do anything else because they
say its code. We can't relax in our very expensive townhome
when our neighbors are home as we hear every bang. My concern
is to stop the noise in our living room which a 20' x 9' wall
exist between the neighbor and us. Please help I would like
to not tear down the wall but don't want to do something
that doesn't work and end up tearing down the wall after
wards anyways. I was planing on adding a layer of firewall
over the drywall but since losing space is not a real big concern
I'm open to suggestion to resolve the problem once and for
all even if losing 4"-6" to the pretty large room occurs.

David,
I don't have any answers for you, but the information on soundproofing.org about soundproofing walls looks useful.  I live in a townhouse that has exactly the same problem as yours, though perhaps even worse.  My neighbor's kitchen cabinets are on the opposite side of the wall of my bedroom.  They are night owls and like to visit the kitchen all night long.  Every time they close a cabinet door there's a loud bang and I wake up.  I am considering rebuilding the common wall from my side with RC channel, soundboard, cement?!  The alternative is to sleep on the living room couch, which I have been doing for some time now.
Yours in misery, wishing you luck,
Rob

A "false wall" would be the best answer here.

Just a suggestion....They do sell cushions that u stick on cabinet door so when they close it stops the slamming sound.  Maybe u could pick some up or offer to install them for your neighbor...if they are nice. It might not eliminate the problem but it might reduce the noise and it's cheap. :)
