I got my soundproofing stuff....
« on: March 09, 2007, 12:35:54 AM »
and i'd like to do one last check to make sure i'm getting the best sound protection for my application.  I can't really follow the channel approach or off-set studs due to limited space so I intend to do the following:

1  Glue 1/4" Supersound proofing foam mat to studs
2. Seal seams with Vinyl Nitrate Tape
3. Add 1/4" Cement board (screwed into studs)
4. Seal Cement board seams with lead tape
5. Staple 1/8 foam with 1/4 MLV to cement board
6. 5/8 sheet rock & tape.

Any thoughts on how well this will mitigate party wall sounds?

You'll want to seal the cement board with a couple layers of paint first.

"staple to cement board"?  Not likely...

Wow, I totally missed that one.  Yeah, you'll have a lot of bent staples trying to do that!

Now that I'm (semi) awake, I would recommend scrapping your plan.  Keep it simple.  Since you can't add significant thickness to the wall, adding a layer of 5/8" drywall with Green Glue will work just fine.  Seal the seams, gaps and penetrations with acoustical caulk and foil tape (optional).  You'll need extenders for the electrical boxes, too.
