Sound Proofing Window job not gone right.

Hi im after some tips or hints about what to do next.

Ive had a go a creating a sound proof acrylic window with 3mm acrylic panels residing behind a standard wooden window with at least a 10cm air gap between the original glass panels and new single acrylic panel.

The panel covers the whole wooden window frame ie window box etc.  The window is about 190cm * 200cm - so its a fairly decent size window.

The problem i have got is there is some form of resonance or reverb in the window frame now as the traffic goes past – other than that it works a treat. 

I believe it is caused by the window box not being isolated from the wall and the wall receiving sound energy and transferring it to the new window panel attached to the window box - which is held on tightly by magnetic seals.

What im after is some way to maintain the seal, but reduce or decouple the new second window from the window box to avoid the vibration – maybe not use magnets but some other form of seal and use some other form of fastener.

Maybe a thicker size of acrylic window - would also help ?

If anybody could give me any suggestions it may help me and others.....

I would guess your acrylic is too thin.  You may be able to stiffen it up some way, rather than replacing it.  Maybe doubling it up or using some smaller sheets glued to it.  You can test this theory by applying a dampening material to it like tape to see if it helps.

That's why I've always recommended 1/2" thick.

To improve the seal and reduce vibration transfer to the new acrylic panel you can use our closed cell vinyl nitrile tape.  It is 1/8" thick, compressable, and is available in 1", 2" and 4" widths.  This material absorbs and blocks sound/vibration.  For info see SSP Tape in this article:
