Soundproof window in Chicagoland
« on: August 08, 2007, 03:03:51 AM »

I want to install an interior storm window in my condo to reduce the outside noise. Since it is a condo unit, I can not touch the existing window and screen. I called HomeDepot, but they said they only replace old window. Does anybody know any good storm window (soundproof window) vendor in Chicagoland? Really appreciate your info.

I'd suggest using the phone book.  Don't worry about getting a 'soundproof' window; a regular, low-priced replacement window (installed with your existing window) will kill a lot of noise - you'll be satisfied enough.

Thanks for your info. I also think so since the existing window is an old single panel one (over 40 years).

Thanks very much for your info.

I possibly will not DIY. I called several local window service companies, most of them do not install a window inside an existing window.  It is kind of hard to find a credential provider. How is the service of www.soundproofwindows.com?

Thanks again.

The service of soundproowindows.com is sketchy at best.  Some people report good satisfaction while others were not happy.  I guess it comes down to the local installer who does the work.
Storm windows (available from hardware store in the past) are for exterior installation.  Some people have installed storm windows on the outside and acrylic on the inside of their existing windows.  While this does not allow for ventilation it does work well for sound blocking.  You'll need at least 2" air gap between interior acrylic pane and existing glass.
