Two problems - Bass and Television
« on: October 23, 2008, 09:40:52 PM »
I live on the second floor of 3 floor complex.
On one side of my apartment is my living room, where I have a home theatre system. My neighbors below have no problem with the sound level, but they HATE the bass. Even when I turn the sub-woofer down, they bang on the ceiling. I've read on this forum that there isn't a whole lot I can do, that's really cheap. What if I put the sub-woofer on top of a few mdf panels, and put those on top of an anti vibration pad? How much is an anti vibration pad anyway, and where can I buy one? Assuming this would help.

By the way, my neighbors above me don't care very much about the bass. What they do have an issue with is the television on the other side of the house, in my bedroom. There's no soundproofing between the floors there, and they complain that the television is too loud, when it's on low. They're the type of people that can hear a pin drop, and they're trying to make that my problem. Is it my problem that we can hear each others conversations through the ceiling, or is it the landlords?

As for the sub-woofer:  Using MDF is probably not the best way to go (MDF is used to build speaker cabinets because it broadcasts sound waves so well).  You can get anti vibration pads of all types at   There are even speaker hangers there (you would need to suspend your speakers with them - works great).
As for the TV noise disturbing the neighbors (and portable panels as well) there is info (it pertains to TV above - just reverse the scenario) about "kits" you can do yourself for solving apartment living noise situations at
