White noise machines

Does anybody have experience with white noise machines?

Just out of curiosity, how loud of noise can these things typically mask if placed a couple feet away, (nightstand by a bed).  I’m thinking 50dB would probably be way too loud, but I don’t really know.  Best guesses please.

Any recommendations for a good one?

I have a Marpac 980 - about 50 bucks.

It works great and I'm satisfied with the value.  But don't take my word for it, read the reviews on Amazon:

It's definitely not as loud as a box fan on the high setting.  At it's loudest, maybe somewhere between low and medium...

In my opinion, it's better at masking certain frequencies, though.

If you have a well-soundproofed room to begin with, it's more than adequate.
