Soundproofing for property conversion in United Kingdom
« on: September 24, 2008, 09:43:38 AM »
Hi All

I am about to convert a single detached property (in the United Kingdom built in 2000) into 4 terraced properties using the existing structure.

The current properties internal wall are made of 100mm dense concrete blocks with dot & dab 12.5mm plasterboard (Sheetrock?).

They will now become the party walls of the new terraced houses and need upgrading so they meet UK standards which is 43db.

My main concern is that I cant add too much additional depth to the walls as I only have 12feet to play with so I was wondering what would be the most cost efficient method.

Any help would be greatly appreciated

Cant' get much help in the UK

Thanks James

Hi

I did a similar thing a couple of years ago.

I used a company called Custom Audio: www.customaudiodesigns.co.uk They are in the UK.

They were happy to give me lots of advice on the telephone before I parted with my hard earned cash.

Hope this is helpful

There are plenty of other UK websites/companies that have even more experience than custom audio you could checkout  <a href="http://www.soundproofingforum.co.uk/" target="_blank">Soundproofing Forum or <a href="http://www.bicpro.co.uk/" target="_blank">Bicester Soundproofing Products I ordered from Bicester Products their Acousticel R10 is great stuff.  My clients were really pleased with the results.

Custom Audio have good products but I would advise extreme caution when listening to their advice. They advised me to put MLV straight onto a hardwood floor then cover with padding and carpet. When I mentioned that I thought padding should go down under the MLV to decouple it from the wood floor, the consultant spoke to some of the people in the office and came back saying, no don't bother, it won't make any difference. Which is wrong - and its an expensive, time consuming mistake to fix.

Steviemoo,
By the way, how did your flooring project come out after you corrected that same error?

Er, I haven't actually fixed that room yet. However I have done another room (yesterday in fact) using the padding/MLV/MLV/padding method and already noticed a much greater improvement, so I will at some point get around to fixing it.
