Soundproofing a window for rumble strip road noise.
« on: November 24, 2008, 02:35:51 PM »

I have rumble strips speed reduction right under my 6th floor bedroom window. I am considering using some kind of sound reduction curtain material as I can neither change the windows nor do any other civil works. I am looking for any helpful information. I was also wondering if removable panes could be used of the same type as the Andersen doors found on most houses main entrances? The window size is 79x59"H.

Your help is valuable.

Thank you.

There is a lot of information regarding options for windows at this link:
The second option is to a company called  Many people get a local glass co to provide the laminated glass and do it themselves.  Acrylic in 3/8" thick also works well (the MagnaSeal system listed at the end of the article).  If you want a black out material then check out the window plugs.  All these options are effective to differing degrees.  Be careful of curtains - most are sound absorbing curtains (not sound proof curtains) that will block out around 10% of the noise.
