Sound proof entrance door - Question
« on: December 28, 2008, 09:14:51 PM »
Hi Everyone,

I have some highway traffic noise that I am trying to sound proof.

I am looking to replace my front entrance door but i'm not sure if i need those special 'acoustical' doors.  Are steel doors sufficient to get an STC rating of ~55?  What should the inside of the door be filled with?

THANKS!

You can replace your door with a solid core door or an MDF door, Make sure the weather stripping is new and use a transom seal to address the gap at the bottom of the door.
If you need more you can add a layer of MLV to the door to increase the STC rating.
Review the page on soundproofing a door.

Steel doors will not solve all of your problem so i suggest you to go for acoustic door, it will be one time cost and your problem will be ruined

Yes an acoustical door would be the best choice if you had 2k-3k or more to spend for a door.
Here are some pricing I found...

You can greatly improve an MDF door with a couple layers of MLV and address any leaks around the perimeter to achieve nearly the same STC rating for far less....
