How to Silence a Roomba vacuum? (quickly!)
« on: January 18, 2009, 03:36:32 AM »
I am an artist/sculpture/student and I need to silence a roomba (robotic vacuum cleaner). I haven taken the vacuum motor out of the roomba but left the drive motor--I attach video screens to the tops of the roombas, so I just need the roomba for mobility, to move the video screen around the room. However, the drive motor is still loud, so loud that it overpowers the audio coming out of the video screen ( a portable, tablet style dvd player). I am hoping there is some sort of safe, effective sound-blocking foam that I can wrap around the roomba.

more details:
after i take out the vacuum motor/brushes/etc. I velcro the portable DVD player to the top of the roomba, then make a silicone rubber shell or "body" that hides the roomba and everything but the dvd player screen. I was thinking of using floral foam underneath the silicone rubber to save rubber/money but I am worried that floral foam might amplify the roomba's motor.

See an image of the roomba's bumping up against one another for more explanation

I don't know much about soundproofing, but it seems like a lot of the foam is toxic and has to be between walls.
I need something safe for open-air, light weight, and powerful at blocking sound.
I have a show in less than two weeks and this needs to be done!

Your link did not work but never the less, you should use SSP foam mat..here is the link.

The first chart you see is all the same mat, I recommend using the thickest mat you can and cover as much as possible.
This will give you a reduction but any exposed areas will be where remaining sound will bleed from.
The floral foam will not work.
