silicone sealant v green glue!
« on: March 25, 2009, 09:21:09 PM »
hello,
I was thinking that silicone sealant might be a cheaper alternative to green glue and be just as efficient at soaking up vibration on party walls and chimney breasts from neighbours next door.
cheers

Sorry to say,but there is no way Silicone sealant can achieve any where near the reductions you would get from Green Glue, if you want to save money just reduce the volume. Use 2 tubes per 4'x8' sheet vs. 3 tubes.

I have some leftover Dow Corning silicone sealant from another job I was working on- would this not work as well to soundproof as green glue. Would it at least be adequate? I'm trying to save money. Here is a blurb about the stuff: http://www.dowcorning.com/content/seoseal/

No, silicone does not compare to green glue..Green glue is a viscoelastic adhesive compound that actually transforms sound and vibration into heat through chemistry. This product never dries it only cures in the assembly.
Silicone will dry and therefore could transmit vibration and if your not careful you could create a resonence chamber between sheets of drywall.
