Question on windows
« on: November 13, 2009, 05:19:29 PM »

We have house about 150 ft from a road and until recently that was nto a problem.  Unfortunately the city built a new school and this road has become the main access to the school.  We realize that our double pane windows do not provide much sound proofing.  We are looking at increasing the sound resistance to the road noise but are concerned about asthetics.  This rules out storm windows or anything that would detract from the looks of the windows.
Question:  What is a good window to help block the street noise?  Also what are some recommendations to beef up the sound resistance of the walls at a later time?
I know that many on this web site state not to use sound proof windows but what are the options if we want the windows to match the others in the house?  The problem is only in our bedroom which is on the second floor and has a view of the road, the rest of the house is protected from sound by a berm.

In regards to the windows, The highest reduction value would be a second STC rated window 2" apart from the existing window. Then next in line would be using the acrylic insert "Magnaseal" system.

When it comes to the walls a new layer of 5/8" drywall and "Green Glue" is a fairly simple system and if you want to even "beef up" that system you could add a layer of MLV /psa to the existing drywall first.
