My Condo unit is above the GYM... HELP!!
« on: January 19, 2010, 08:23:59 PM »
So every morning starting at 6am, I hear the sounds and feel the vibrations of the weights being dropped on the floor from the gym below me.  What can I do?  The building is all concrete, and the gym floor has 1/4 inch rubber floors directly on concrete.  Its really only my bedroom that I'm worried about as I can't sleep.  I need the cheapest most effective solution.

I should also add that I hear noises through the walls, from the cars driving down the ramp into the underground parking lot.  They drive over this metal grill (I'm guessing drainage) and I clearly hear a "clang-clang" noise... and that's 2 floors below :(  Yikes.

Help!!

Well this is definetly structure borne noise issue, as you stated "hear noises through the walls, from the cars driving down the ramp into the underground parking lot." Not good! and the chances of you getting quality results from an inexpensive solution is most likely not going to happen. You would need to decouple from the structure in order to reduce the vibration traveling through the concrete structure of the building.
You can try a dampening approach with green glue, MLV and a new layer of drywall for the walls, use MLV w/ closed cell foam underlayment for under carpet and padding.
