Sound barrier for abandoned flue opening
« on: February 14, 2010, 02:45:57 AM »
Hope someone can help me. I'm on the 2nd floor of a 3-unit condo/townhouse and have a noise problem form my neighbor below me. I can hear his tv/stereo through the flue of our shared but abandoned fireplace chimney flue. The flue is no longer in use however a gas unit is installed in his fireplace opening and there is nothing in my fireplace except for a vent opening. In my unit I can distinctly hear tv noise and conversations through the vent opening. I've opened this vent and found that there is a hole in the floor about 1.5'x1.5'where the heating vent used to run through. How do I effectively acoustically seal this opening in the floor to provide a barrier for sound? Should I consider also doing something to the vent grille itself?

Thanksi n advance.

Seal it closed "Air Tight" , start there and if need be seal off the fireplace if its not in use anymore.
You dont need expensive products to seal this off.

Thanks for the reply. Sealing the floor opening "air tight" seems like the best solution - should i use plywood or gypsum board? Any suggestions as to which materials would be best suited for this application?
