Duplex sound proofing
« on: March 02, 2010, 09:40:34 AM »
Hey guys first post here :) Im renting a duplex and the thing i like about it is the only wall i share with the duplex beside me is about 5' wide and 8' tall and its in the kitchen. I found out shortly after moving in that the wall is paper thin and I can hear the neighbor closing cabinets and sometimes just walking in his kitchen :( The problem is i love to watch movies.. LOUD, on my newly completed theater thats in my living room which is right next to the kitchen. Is there any thing i can to to block as much sound as i can from going to the next duplex. I'm currently unemployed so money is very tight id like to do this on the cheap.

Here are some pics of the wall if it helps

tnx guys!

Renter / cheap / effective.....this is like water and oil, they dont mix  :(

Will the owner let you add new layers of drywall? if so you could add MLV / green glue and a new layer of 5/8" drywall. You will have to move the cabinets for this install.

When it comes to cabinets slamming and the walking, this is structure borne impact and is not going to be cheap nor easy to resolve this would require alot of decoupling from the structure. " Breaking the pathways through the structure" most likely you will have to live with this one.
