Soundproofing under existing hardwood floors
« on: April 02, 2010, 04:00:27 AM »
I would like to preserve the look of my hardwood flooring and not rip up any of it to lay subflooring or use rugs. What's the best sound and vibration reducing method that I can use underneath the house between the joists? I can't seem to find anyone who has discussed this issue.

Is mass loaded vinyl effective between joists? Is it a good idea to place that underneath a house where there is moisture buildup?

Thanks in advance!

Because this will be under the house the best course of action would be 2 layers 1/2" hardie board with green glue sandwiched in between.
Once you have cut all the exposed nails you can use heavy duty contruction adhesive glue the first 1/2" hardie board in between the joists to the substraite the apply green glue to the second layer of 1/2" hardie board and screw it into the first layer. Then you want to apply caulk around the perimeter to seal it up...
Probably as good as you can get without tearing up your floor or closing up and sealing the entire underside of the house.
