Advise/Hlelp needed to soundproof a ceiling!! please help!!
« on: September 10, 2010, 09:56:23 AM »
I need some advice or help in soundproofing a ceiling!! I live in a flat with neighbours above, directly above my bedroom is my neighbours living room, and the sound insulation is pretty poor! My flat is rented and my landlord has no interest in doing any soundproofing himself. Does anyone have any ideas how I can sound proof my ceiling? I was considering using mass loaded vinyl inside some old cushions and attaching them tightly to the ceiling, but I don't know if that would make any difference!

Can anyone please help????

If your doing this for impact noise(footfall) No it will not work, if you are doing it for airborne sound then it will most likely deliver poor results.
Impact/footfall you must decouple from the structure using clips and channel.
For average (nothing above 86 dba) airborne noise you can add MLV w/psa , green glue and 5/8" drywall directly to the ceiling.
The correct course of action would be soundproofing from the source side using MLV w/Closed cell foam underlayment beneath carpet and padding in the unit above you.
