wanted: noise protection from underneath
« on: September 20, 2010, 07:46:14 PM »
Hi folks,

in order to protect my apartment from esp. my neighbors' TV and voices below in a 100-y-old condo house, I am desperately tapping your advice.

- At the moment, I have what I inherited from the previous owner: an approx. 2-y-old sturdy wall-to-wall carpet (approx 1/2") with sort of a felt padding underneath (3/8"), which then sits on plywood. There is nothing under the plywood but the usual joists/beams and then, of course, the neighbors' drywall ceiling.

There is no way, they would agree to blow insulation between their ceiling and my floor, so I have to use whatever I can on top of the plywood. I am now having a cushy thicker carpet installed but do need independent expert advice on what to put underneath to improve the noise-protection:
- I was told that Platinum Plus carpet padding (plus eventually thin Air Flow paper barrier with cushioning) would best do the job. => Yet, would that be any better than the felt we currently have? Should we put sth on top of the felt (but then it might become to soft to walk on it)? What else would you recommend?

Thanks
Dan

You should use our MLV w/closed cell foam underlayment beneath the carpet and padding. This will have to go wall to wall and be sealed prior to installation of padding and carpet.

Thanks,
so what do you think - the carpet guys that told me that Plushstep Premium 8# 1/2 inch Pad would be plentiful might not get the problem solved?

For impact/footfall yes, but not for airborne sound.
