Resiliant channels

I am putting up a new ceiling under an existing plaster ceiling. I am attaching studs perpendicular to the joists.  On the new joists I will place resiliant channels.
I would like to know whether the resiliant channels should be placed:
a)perpendicular to the new studs (parrallel to the existing joists) or
b)perpendicular to the joists( lenth wise along the new studs)?
