Basment Ceiling - Affordable Sound Proofing
« on: February 15, 2011, 10:17:35 PM »
Hello, I am in the process of finishing my basement and am to the point of doing the ceiling.  The family room is right under the master bedroom so I need to put some thought into sound proofing.  As always money is at a premium so I want to do the best I can without breaking the bank.

Room is very large and has 9' ceilings.  My plan is to put R-38 insulation between the joists (Joists are wood, deck above is wood) and I was going to connect the drywall right to the joists.

After reading through some of the posts on here resiliant channel or padded tape on the joists is suggested.  The tape would be cheaper Im sure but is there anything someone can send me that is a visual example of how to install the resiliant channel and drywall?

What Im trying to block is basically all noise coming from that room (Home Theater, talking, etc) going upstairs..  Dont want to get beat up by the wife while watching my movies!!

Any suggestions would be greatly apreciated.

Thanks,

Troy

Troy,
If your trying to block home theater noise you will need to use clips and channel for sure!
I would suggest using MLV as well, clips and channel followed by double drywall with green glue....
And this would be a decent reduction based on the home theater..nothing will get you 100% blocking.
If you dont break the connection from drywall to joist you will not achieve a decent reduction value.

Randy,

Thanks for the reply.  Do you have anything that would resemble "An Idiots Guide to Installing Channel"??
