Need advice to isolate ultrasonic noise
« on: April 01, 2011, 03:27:59 PM »
I need to build a soundproof enclosure for a benchtop ultrasonic welder.  The frequency is very high (20KHz) so I imagine just about any type of foam would stop it but what would you recommend?  And what material to use for the housing.  Anything else I would need like special tape or sealant?  This is all new to me.  Thanks.

Foam will not work for this. you need lead sheeting. The heavier the better 2lb-7lb. Lead tape for seams 1/32"

Can you give ma a part # for the lead sheeting?  I got an e-mail reply from Joel and he said to solder all seams.  What's required tape or solder?  And what material should I use for the box?

Solder or 1/32" lead tape, either one will work.

Thanks Joel.  The link you gave me is for 20' but I don't think we need that much.  P/N 099100-132 is the same thing sold by the foot right?

Sorry for the mixup Randy.  Like I said though, I'm completely foreign to this so once I have my materials what's the best way to assemble them?  Does the lead sheet get glued to the OSB with Liquid Nails or can I use wood screws?  Joel said something about covering fastener heads with lead buttons but I don't see any available.  Also, the 1/32" lead tape isn't adhesive backed.  Again, do I use glue or screws?  And should I make my seams in the corners or on the inside faces of the box?  I also need an access door in it.  What's the best way to close the gaps?

I prefer glue with full coverage. Screws will act like tunning forks through the system which means you would have to address them.

Seam the corners, remember you are building a fish tank.

For and access door will have to made exactly like the box(lead covered) with a compression seal as it meets the box.

Why lead and not mass loaded vinyl?
