Soundproofing Basement Band Room
« on: April 27, 2011, 08:52:04 PM »
Hello out there.  I'm looking for some suggestions for my basement band room.
Here is my situation:
  • Single family home in the US
  • Unfinished basement with concrete floor, 2 cinder block walls and 2 interior walls, joists above
  • Glued 2" Styrofoam insulation on the exterior walls and studded with 2x4s
  • I put R-30 pink insulation between all the ceiling joists.  I regret doing this after reading that fiberglass doesn't do much for sound proofing
  • bought a sound proof door

Questions are:
- Should I remove the pink insulation from the ceiling joists? Would something like roxul be worth it?
- Since 2 of the walls are exterior cinder block- is there any point in using special drywall on those?
- What is the best way to soundproof the interior walls and ceiling? Quickrock? Green Glue? Do the resilient channels work?
- Are there any other big things I should keep in mind before hanging the drywall?

Thanks in advance! :)

Build the 2 interior walls and ceiling with cotton fiber insulation or mineral wool. Attach #1 MLV to the entire wall and ceiling, taped and sealed which controls the cavity and adds STC. Then use clips and channel, finally attach 5/8" sheet rock..if more is needed then add the green glue and second layer of drywall.
After this is done you can assess the cinder block wall value...you should have already water sealed the cinder block prior to wall construction.
You can contact me directly if you would like to discuss particulars of this system.

Wow, thanks! Great suggestions.

Where would you recommended purchasing these materials. Home Depot and Lowes don't seem to have this stuff. Is buying online a good option?

Also - are there any good references on the best way to install and seal the MLV?

As for the cinder block, I figured the rigid foam insulation would act as a vapor barrier and we also had a sunk pump installed.

I can post pictures later to give you a idea of what I'm working with.

Thanks again!
