Sound Dampening a Storage Unit, HELP ME
« on: May 09, 2011, 06:33:18 PM »
My band recently rented a storage unit, it's 10x20.  The walls are metal and the floor is cement.  I need to dampen the sound in there, obviously.  I know I need to get a carpet/s for the floor.  I am on a budget, and wondered if putting up bedroom blankets or pillows could help absorb the sound.  I also came across this non-fiberglass insulation called:  UltraTouch Denim Insulation Multi-Purpose Roll.  It's pretty cheap and is safe.  Do you think this could help dampen the sound?  Also, I'd appreciate any other advice to help dampen the room.  The ceilings are high and already pretty insulated.
Thanks,
J

Ultratouch works great as an absorber, I would use R13 value instead of R8 because you have very little mass value on the walls.
now what you are doing is just for the echo and reverberation in the room it will NOT greatly reduce sound leaving the storage unit.

If I can't get the R13, I hope the R8 will still work, also if I can't get either, will blankets at least help a little
Thanks,

R8 is better than nothing...blankets do very little in comparison but you should see some reduction.

I loaded in some equipment yesterday, and saw a band that had put foam sheething such as this:
http://www.homedepot.com/Building-Materials-Insulation-Sheathings/h_d1/N-5yc1vZbaxx/h_d2/Navigation?langId=-1&storeId=10051&catalogId=10053&Nu=P_PARENT_ID&storeId=10051&catalogId=10053&langId=-1
up against the wall.  These large pieces avg 10 bucks a sheet, will they reduce any echo, or are they a waste of money?
