25 Gauge is the standard at all the box stores it seems. I'm worried about my plan to finish the final ceiling with 2 layers of drywall sandwiched with Green glue. I'm surpised how tough it is to find information on this.
The closest I came was a post on another forum advising someon eto use 22 Gauge for ceilings but that was about it.

Forgot to ask, does it really make a difference if the rock is hung with fine thread drywall self tappers or the typical drywall, coarse threads?

#6 fine tread drywall screws pointed tip...anything else will pull through the 25 gauge.

I ened up getting some 20 Gauge from the drywall supply shop, since they didn't have 22. They did have 25 gauge with a reinforced edge which probably could have handled a double layer application (but they coouldn't confirm in every book they had)

As you can see the information is massive and some elusive.
RC-1 single leg should be used for walls only and for single layer 5/8" rock. spread no greater than 16" OC
RC-2 2 legged channel for ceilings or walls 2 layers 5/8" sheet rock. spread can be 24" OC
20 gauge will need a self tapper. and the chance of screws slipping off channel face during install is likely to happen.
