Road Noise dissapears at front of the house
« on: June 20, 2011, 06:57:28 PM »
I have a question about backyard road noise. I own a view house with a back yard about 200ft away and 30ft above from a busy road (speed 35 MPH) - no truck's, just regular traffic. The back yard has NO fence and quite a bit of road noise. The thing that is interesting is that in the Front of my house (about 50 ft from the backyard) there is NO road noise. My house is a ranch with a very low roof and the height of my house cannot be more the 12-14 ft (definitely a low rider roof line). As I walk down the side of the home from the back yard, noise drops in volume every 10 ft until it is completely gone at the front of the house. I also have NO noise in the house what so ever.

This whole thing seems very odd to me as the noise in the back yard is very distinguishable. Is this because the rest of the property is so quit? Also, I read many posts that a fence has no bearing on reducing road noise. In my case could a regular 6 foot fence do the trick - or reduce the noise by 20%?

this would be based on distance, mass of the wall, length and height of the wall which would dictate shadow zone and diffracted path.

Your front yard has a shadow zone based on the height of the house..as you walk away 2 things will happen...the noise level DB will reduce by distance squared from source and eventually as you get further away the noise will be heard again as if the house disappeared(out of the shadow zone).

I would do a simple test to see if you get any value based on height.

Do a make shift wall with 3/4" 4' x 8' OSB (oriented strand board) and stand on high end, overlap each piece and put up a good 20'-25' see what you get...if you get reduction based on shadow zone than you know we can build the wall with Mass. = Reduction

Call me if you would like to .

What do you mean the opposite?? you are the person generating the noise and trying not to disturb your neighbors?
