Soundproofing basement ceiling question
« on: September 14, 2011, 09:52:41 AM »
Hi there.  I have been looking into soundproofing my basement ceiling and have a quick question regarding the instalation of both MLV and the sound clips.  From another post someone was saying to install the MLV directly to the joists, then the soundclips over top of the MLV.  I just wanted to confirm that that was the right order.  Also how much ceiling height will i be losing with the floating ceiling approximately?  One last question regarding the instalation of ceiling lighting, and that would be how to go about this without destroying the insulation effect.  I plan on doing my entire basement(~900 sq feet) and it doesnt have to be perfect(may be renting it out or using it for an entertainment center), but if i am going to spend the time, money and effort to do this, i would like it done right.  Thanks in advance.

Yes, Mlv is installed and completely sealed airtight prior to clips and channel install. I do not like incorporating recessed lighting but if you must, then you will need to build individual boxes up inside the ceiling consisting of the same material which is installed in the ceiling system. This will the be sealed into the MLV layer prior to decoupling.

ceiling loss for full system is 2 5/8"

If you have time, why dont you give me a call and we can discuss the particulars in detail.
