ROLUX SafeNSound?
« on: November 25, 2011, 07:51:30 PM »
My contractor is proposing to install 3" Rolux sound barrier and 1/2" Quietrock sheet rock to address the issues I've been having with shared walls in a townhouse.  I am the middle unit: with one neighbor its snoring (argh!) and tv voice sounds; with the second neighbor its distant base reverberations from a stereo.  Would this be an apprpriate solution for either or both?

Thanks!

As long as the quiet rock is installed on channel and clips...and is caulked between sheets (buttering the edge) and you leave a gap around the perimeter filled with acoustical caulk to maintain the float...outlets should be addressed and sealed. you might still hear some snoring and for sure the bass.
This will ONLY reduce airborne sound roughly higher than 500hz for best reduction value....The bass (LF) you are still going to hear due to the fact it will go under your wall and adjoining walls / ceiling....this is truly a structure remittance.
Now just so we are clear, I dont promote quite rock because it is a mass value only....sound is based on a range of frequencies therefore you must apply more principles to achieve viable reductions...hence the decoupling method I mentioned above...
Also you must remember if you are only treating one wall then you have 4 other surface areas to remit sound. Cost vs reduction is our greatest challenge.

Depending on the cost of materials and labor there might be a cheaper method that would deliver the same results or a better system at the same cost...
If you want you can give me a call direct on Monday 11-28
