BOILER ROOM "HUM" IN BASEMENT OF PRE-WAR CO-OP IN NYC!!
« on: December 16, 2011, 04:49:52 AM »
Help!  I live in a one-bedroom co-operative apartment in New York City; I purchased it seven years ago.  Oddly enough, it was about two years in that I first noted a hum.  When I first toured the property, and inquired what was beneath me (it is a first-floor apt.), I was told, "storage".  Well, that turned out to be a clever half-truth.  While there IS storage below, most of the space beneath my apt. is taken up by an ENORMOUS boiler... again, this is a pre-war building, and this room is gigantic, not so much in area but height; the boiler itself must be at least 12' tall.

What, if any options, are available to me insofar as soundproofing?  It's driving me crazy, and I also worry about re-sale, down the road!

Thank you so much,
Bankish

Most likely it is the boiler that needs replacing....if you only noticed the hum for the last 2 out of 7 years this would be where I looked first....   something is wearing out.....
