Impact noise from next door
« on: April 13, 2012, 02:57:28 AM »
Our bedroom shares a paper thin wall with our neighboors' kitchen. We have carpeting but they have hardwood floors. We've moved the bed to the far side of the room and use a fan, but still wake up every AM to them walking around with shoes or slamming kitchen cabinet doors, emptying dishwasher etc . What are our options? We're in a rental unit so can't build a new wall, but may be able to get away with some "remodeling".

By not being able to build a "new wall", but may be being able to get away with some ""remodeling"", do you mean that you could tear out the current drywall and install staggered studs?  Not double walls, but its the closest you gonna get.  You're dealing with lots of high frequency and need a larger air gap and thicker wallboard.  Insulating will help too.  If that's not good enough, add damping glue and a second layer of wallboard.  Also, you may have flanking noise issues.
