Stop neighbors dog barks - required stc or thickness
« on: August 14, 2012, 01:32:00 PM »
Hi,

I want to build a wall outside my room to insulate from my neighbors barking dog that is very close (8 yards). I have an old house so its not brick and very noisy. Luckily, I do have a deck that i can build a wall on in front of my room to stop some noise, but i want to make sure it can stop the loud, deep barking of a large yard dog. Can anyone give me suggestions? Obviously brick would be ideal, but unpragmatic, so ill need to utilize things like cement sheet, insulation and plasterboard. Ive got some double glaze windows i will use and i can plug them if need be. Can my goals be achieved and what stc should i aim for? the wall can be built about 1.5 yards from my actual room. I know brick veneer is about stc 53, so i was aiming for roughly the same, or is that overkill?

53 STC should be fine....it will be the height and length of the wall that will be the main factors in the reduction value.

Hi, what do you mean height and length? Why would that be a factor? I would have thought width and density? Also, do i need to have stc53, can i have less to save on materials? thank you

Line of sight and the diffracted path is what determines reduction after mass of the wall... you can have a heavy thick wall and it only cover 6' of quiet zone....

we have done construction zones only using 26 STC products, it all comes down to what type of sound your trying to reduce and barking dogs is a hard one...
