Exhaust fan is vibrating my floors, shaking my bed
« on: August 16, 2012, 06:23:43 PM »
Hi,

I always noticed that my apartment was vibrating and shaking from the exhaust fan on the roof, but it didn't bother me to the point of keeping me up. About two weeks ago, I noticed the shaking was stronger than it has been the year and a half I lived here. Now I can't sleep at all. One night I didn't sleep til 7am, I'm so tired and have barely slept the last two weeks.

At first I thought it was a fan in my neighbor's apartment cause his floors are very old and sometimes when he walks around, my bed will jolt me awake. So I thought the big fan he put in his window or the one on his floor was probably the thing shaking constantly since even his walking was noticeable. I thought maybe cause my headboard isn't super tight, it might be extra sensitive, so I secured that, but I still feel this annoying vibrating all over.

IApparently they cleaned the exhaust fan two weeks ago and I think someone tried to put rubber around it or under it or something, but it didn't seem to work. It's shaking even more than ever and this time it keeps me up. I do'nt know if it shakes more when it's cleaner? It's also missing the cover they should have on it so that rain and snow don't get into it.

My bed is on risers and I cut squares of carpet and put it under each riser, even cut up a yoga mat and put that on top of each square of carpet. I put yoga mat pieces on the headboard parts that are against the wall.

What can I do? I'm going crazy, the vibrating is driving me nuts and I do'nt sleep at all. My landlord and superintendent are not nice and they don't like when people complain. I thought about reporting the fan to 311 cause it's also spitting nasty grease apparently, my neighbor said that.

Is there anything else I can do on my end to stop this from affecting me?

THANKS!!!

In order to address structure vibration you must decouple from the structure, so unbolt your head board and move it at least 2" from the wall.
For addressing the unit itself, that to must be decoupled from the structure and you can put down a layer of 2lbs mass loaded vinyl sound barrier in combination with vibration pads.

I'm sorry to say that if the current structure shakes you might have more of a problem than soundproofing materials can reduce. Since you rent it might be very difficult for them to let you put in a soundproof decoupled ceiling or wall systems.

If you can get on the roof when the unit is running go check for hard connections to the building and see if they are vibrating like crazy....those connections that are vibrating must be un coupled.

Yeah, it is a very large unit...I do see some places where these big bars which are part of it are attached to the roof...

But also, I lived with this for a while, I don't know why it's stronger just in the past two weeks since they cleaned it. I know my neighbor bought these tiny rubber things and put them under the bars, I don't know if that is what made it worse or not...

I did just talk to my neighbor, he put his fan on his radiator and window and turned it on, so I laid down in my bed and it was shaking even more from his fan...

I did pull out my bed from the wall all the time, but I pushed it back to the wall cause when it is not against the wall, the headboard is looser and shakes around whenever he is walking around next door.

The picture I attached is of the exhaust fan, you can see the part where these huge metal bars are touching the roof.  And I attached a pic of where my neighbor put down these little rubber parts....

If I put this on the floor under my bed, will it help?

oh wow!!!!

Decoupling this unit looks to be real difficult, I have not had the experience dealing with a unit like this before...
the noise increase could be caused by a number of reasons, if they did any mechanical changes to the unit all the way down to the dirty unit causing a dampening effect for the vibration of the metal..
Your guess is as good as mine on this one..
Im not sure how I can address this one from the forum here so I think it would be best to give me a call direct and we can go over a few things that you can apply and see if it gets us any where.

Putting this product under your bed would help for some airborne sound and vibration.
