Two Side by Side Teaching Rooms
« on: November 20, 2012, 04:28:13 AM »
I have a 600 sq/ft rectangular basement in which I'm building two teaching rooms (Guitar/Bass/Piano) and a waiting area.  The rooms are 10x12 and although they have a 9 ft ceiling, I'm dropping it and double insulating it a 8' 3".  I suggested all walls to be double drywalled with GG and genie-clips, backer boxes on pot lights, and sound tape/putty on ducts and electrics.

Here's the deal:

I really just need to deaden sound between rooms and upstairs so it doesn't distract the other teacher or bother my family.  Both rooms will have insulated steel door with glass window or a solid colonial door with glass insert.  The door needs to be see through for liability and security.

Is it overkill? Is there a more economical solution for what I need?

there really is no such thing as over kill in soundproofing.

Your approach will work, if anything you should add mass loaded vinyl to improve the system.

Just make sure you seal everything up like a fish tank.

Thanks :) As a follow up, is building a room within a room a better and more economical building solution?  I was doing some research today and was finding mixed opinions and no hard evidence of either.  It seems that companies selling genie clips and whisper clip type products are refuting the benefits of room within a room.

So If I build a room within a room, do I drywall the insides of the double walls? or just use vapour barrier to hold it in place?

Depends on how far away from existing structure your room is.
If your new frame is with in 6" of the existing structure you should remove existing drywall and maximize the gap size.
If you building in a garage and you have plenty of room to work around the room than yes you would drywall the outside of the room.

so is there a preferred size gap to start with? I've heard if it's too small, it does the opposite of insulating sound transfer.

correct, anything less than 2" can cause a resonance chamber.
