Any feedback on Climatizer Windows?
« on: December 18, 2012, 07:16:20 PM »

Hello, this forum has been a great resource on soundproofing.  I live a block from a busy street.  Recently, developers broke ground on a new mixed-use vertical building on the same busy street.  The combination of the road noise and the construction is driving me crazy.  Surprisingly, the city has given the developer permission to work 24 hours a day.

In hopes of remedying the problem, I visited a retailer to view Milgard Quiet Line windows, but replacements are terribly expensive.  I also consulted with a local dealer for Climatizer windows.  They offer vinyl inner-storm windows, which are more affordable than replacements.  I can't find much feedback on them aside from the testimonials posted on their website.  Does anyone have experience with Climatizers?

Also, the dealer recommended 1/8" double-strength glass.  They sell 3/16" laminated glass as an upgrade.  He believes the laminated glass will give my windows a higher / better STC value than my walls, so I won't realize any benefit.  I understand the laminated glass may be overkill, but I'm worried the double-strength glass won't be sufficient.  The house has 1/16" aluminum windows from the original construction in the 70's.  I should have about a 2.5" gap in between the existing exterior windows and the Climatizers.

I greatly appreciate any responses.

well i seriously doubt your current window system 1/16" glass with the additional 1/8" glass will exceed the STC value of your walls unless the are vinyl siding or wood siding and even then its questionable.
Minimum systems should be 3/16" / 2" air gap or greater / 3/16" or 1/4" laminate glass.
