Replacing a window or adding another window
« on: April 20, 2013, 07:50:17 PM »

Hi experts on the boards,

I want to sound proof my windows and patio doors.

I have already aluminum frame dual pane windows & doors about 20 years old. One choice is to replace them with a sound proofing window (such as JELD-WIN sound master windows). However, the existing windows & doors do reduce noise, albeit not enough.

I am thinking of a new way: keep the existing windows but add another layer of sound proofing windows internally. This way, both windows will work and also there is airspace between them. I will also use sound proofing caulking on the second window.

Do you think this will be effective?

Thank you advance.

Yes, you are doing the correct approach. make sure both sets of windows and doors have quality seals and try to gain the greatest air gap as possible.
