Hi, I am looking to soundproof the ceiling for a cellar. At the moment it only has joists and floorboard that separate the rooms above. I rent the property so I am not looking to make any major changes to the property. I need to reduce the sound levels especially bass frequencies. The cellar is 2meters width and 6meters length. The height is about 6 foot tall, there is an electricity and gas meter that hangs near to the celling on either wall.

What would be the most effective methods of reducing the sound?

many thanks

Joe

Since you rent, in order to reduce bass will require doing a complete floating soundproof ceiling system  and you would also lose 2.5" from the bottom of the joist.
Best bet build yourself an isolation booth.
The cost to soundproof the ceiling for BASS will cost the same if not more than the cost to build your own portable iso booth. You could probably find a used one pretty cheap.
And you can take it with you when you move.

Hi thank you for your reply , doing a bit of research I don’t think i could afford a isolation booth. But maybe I am not looking in the right places? Any idea how much it would cost to build my own?

or would some kind of combination of foam in between the joists and theatre curtain on the ceiling do nothing to reduce the sound? I don’t need it to be completely soundproof

thanks

you can send me a personal e-mail and I will try to help you out based on your budget.

as far as curtains and foam goes they will not reduce as much as you think for the cost, you would be better off just using some cotton fiber insulation in the ceiling. Far cheaper and better.
